The experience of the transgender communuity has been one of pain, struggle, survival, and transcendence. Transcendence to be or go beyond the range or limits. We created the Transcendence Dome as a moment of learning, reflection and repose, within the Long Beach Pride festival celebration.
The dome featured a timeline written by historian and curator (and Long Beach native) Mallery Jenna Robinson to highlight our trancestors, particularly the trans women of color so have been left out of the stories for far too long. The dome also featured a screening of Trans in Trumpland - an award winning series from director Tony Zosherafatain.
As the attendees finished learning about their transcestors and activists - we offered a moment of transcendence to them. To add to the wall of messages for other attendees and to partake in a letter writing campaign.
The message wall was better received that I could have imagined, with attendees finding moments to be so vulnerable and make each other feel so welcome. We witnessed many people feel seen and loved when reading the other messages, it was an incredible moment to share as a community.
The letter writing campaign was set up opposite the message wall, with pre-addressed postcards provided for attendees to send messages to government officials, which were dropped directly into the Transcendence mailbox before leaving the dome.
